This month’s Program Spotlight goes to a student from Newark High School. Amy Micklos is a Junior at Newark High School and has been involved with Best Buddies since its beginning at Newark High School last winter. Amy not only has a wonderful relationship with her buddy, she also is extremely involved in her chapter. Amy’s buddy’s name is Briana Jones and they enjoy participating in chapter activities, going to the movies together and Briana has even gone to some of Amy’s basketball games to cheer her on. Amy was chosen to be Best Buddies Delaware’s representative on the Project UNIFY Delaware Youth for Unity Planning Committee. Amy dedicated her free time for many months leading up to the conference to plan and implement Project UNIFY. The conference was sponsored by Special Olympics Delaware in partnership with Best Buddies Delaware, DFRC and Down Syndrome Association of Delaware as part of the Project UNIFY initiative funded by the United States Department of Education. The goal of Project UNIFY is to activate youth around the country in an effort to develop school communities where all young people are agents of change. During the conference, Amy lead a creative icebreaker exercise surrounding the challenges people have with intellectual disabilities in our community as well as the success and opportunities of those with intellectual disabilities in our community.
